The Echoes of Heroes
Echoes of the fabled heroes of the Shatterlands are the playable characters that players in Fableborne can control actively during Raids. Players can collect various Echoes and empower them in a rouge-lite upgrade system that offers almost limitless customization. Each Echo is made unique by the player’s choices and that is also why Echoes are the first NFT collection introduced in Fableborne.
THE ORIGINS OF THE HEROIC ECHOES
The Esperwood’s Three Decrees
As the Shatterlands’ deified core began to malform, It enacted three separate decrees in the hopes of restoring a portion of its power and, with it, order. The first decree gave birth to the Twisting Aether; a magical barrier of shredding air given form by the clashing four winds, around the realm. It absorbs the elemental energies from within the doomed islands and returns them to the Esperwood as healing nourishment.
Slumbering in Herosleep
In fear of the corrupting changes the Rot could bring upon the land and the exhausted numbers of heroes at the hands of their never-ending opposition against the corrupting entity’s ever-expanding growth, the Esperwood enacted its second decree, the Herosleep. With its omnipresent reach, the deity hypnotized the fabled heroes of the Shatterlands and took them into its deepest layers. Around their slumbering bodies, the deity built a sanctuary, the Hall of Dreams. With every dream they dreamt, the heroes split into versions of themselves, reflecting the different paths they could have taken in their lives and the gifts their altered fates would have bestowed upon them. An army of heroic Echoes filled the tree’s halls, awaiting release and command.
The Summoning of the Fableborne
The Esperwood’s final and most recent decree has been the Summoning. Witnesses tell of a loud, howling noise followed by an influx of newcomers from a faraway universe. These outlanders have been proclaimed Fableborne and are unlike anything the realm has ever seen. Possessing shimmering forms and the power to bear the heroic Echoes and their glorious tales, they charge against the Rot’s advances, growing in prestige and wealth while utilizing their Echoes to ward those who are too powerless to protect themselves from forces unknown.
IN FULL CONTROL
Action Oriented Controls
Echoes of Heroes are the characters that the player can actively control during Raids. They are variants of the slumbering Heroes from the Hall of Dreams, but due to being incomplete copies of fabled Heroes, each Echo is unique and can have different sets of Attributes and Talents.
Echoes are navigated during a Raid with twin-stick controls and a simple set of buttons to keep accessibility at the design’s core.
Making Echoes Unique
Every Echo has a Basic Attack, which can be used continuously, and to make the fight more strategic and fun, the player can unlock one Special Ability and one Ultimate Ability for their individual Echo, both of which have a cooldown and need to be used wisely during a battle.
While upgrading Echoes, players unlock Talents, which are additional passive traits, that enhance the Echoes’ Attributes, like Hit Points or Movement Speed, or provide direct upgrades to the Basic Attack, Special and Ultimate Ability, for example increasing Attack Speed, Critical Damage, Status Effect Duration.
Upgrading Your Echoes
In-game currencies, like Gold and Element Stones, earned by raiding and resource gathering on your island, are used to upgrade Echoes. Whenever an Echo gains a new level, the player needs to choose from three different Talents.
Every Echo comes with a pre-generated list of Talents, but the order is randomised, so it is entirely up to the player to make the right strategic choice to build an Echo that fits their own playstyle. There are different kinds of Talents; Some Talents unlock active Ability, some will modify and increase the effectiveness of active Abilities, while other Talents provide incremental Attribute increases.
Talents come in Levels and Rarities. There is a chance to obtain the same Talent again, and every time this happens, the Talent levels up and increases in power. Each Talent also comes in multiple rarities with significant increases in power the higher rarity you obtain. Whenever you obtain the same Talent, but in higher rarity, all previously selected Talents of that kind will automatically be adjusted to the highest rarity.
Fading Echoes & Revivals
An Echo has a limited amount of lives. Each time an Echo is defeated during a Raid, it “fades”. Once an Echo has faded completely, it can no longer be upgraded or used for raiding. But do not fret, the Echo is not gone just yet.
Players need to revive their Echoes using in-game currencies for Non-NFTs and Fableborne Utility Tokens for NFT Echoes. Whenever an Echo is revived it will lose all previously selected Levels and Talents, but will gain a significant increase to their Attributes based on how many times the Echo was leveled up before.
Echoes come in various rarities like Common, Rare and Epic as well. But that is not all, in the future, we will introduce more rarities. Currently we do not plan to offer the option to breakthrough an Echo from one rarity to another, however, with the unique revival system, a Common Echo can become more powerful than a Rare Echo over time.
Contrary to the usual pre-generated randomized assets, this system makes every Echo unique by active choices, player skill, as well as time and resource investment, which in return means, in Fableborne players have control over customizing and empowering their NFTs in many ways.
HEROIC NFT
In Fableborne, players can obtain a multitude of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), which are assets that allow players to verify their ownership. One type of NFT in the game are versions of slumbering Heroes, the Echoes, which are the playable characters in the game, controlled by the player during Raids.
With Blockchain technology, players in Fableborne can own their progress in the game. We chose to implement NFTs in the game because we strongly believe that players should own what they worked for. If a player likes our game and decides to invest time or money, they should be able to keep what they own.
With true ownership, players can also choose exactly what to do with their Echoes. They might decide to just use them in-game, raid islands, upgrade them if they enjoy the character, trade them if players decide they would rather try a different set of Talents. Future partnerships might even allow players to use their own Echoes in different games. Additionally, while using Echoes of Heroes NFTs, players will be able to earn our Fableborne Utility Token.
Utilizing Blockchain technology has many benefits, but it does not make sense to implement NFTs for everything. There will be a set of Echoes in Common Rarity, that everyone will have access to at all times and are designed to allow a frictionless game experience.
